Fe y Alegría en Argentina (6Kb)Argentina has witnessed during the last decade new outbreaks of poverty.  Further,  a general deterioration in the quality of education is discernible, with the result that a good education has ceased to be a service accessible to all or a factor of social mobility.  Offering a quality education for the poorest people became an unexpected novelty  and  a tremendous challenge.  In the face of this situation, it was decided in 1995 to found Fe y Alegria in this country, for the purpose of promoting its educational mission wherever people are marginalized  and wherever the basic services necessary for human dignity are lacking.

Fe y Alegría en Argentina (6Kb)Fe y Alegria Argentina began to function officially in 1996 with the opening of an education center in one of the poor neighborhoods of Resistencia (Chaco).  Other centers have been progressively opened in Perico (Jujuy), Barrio Ongay, Goya and Bella Vista (Corrientes), Puerto Piray (Misiones), Taco Pozo (Chaco), Monterrico (Jujuy), Embarcación and Barrio Solidaridad (Salta) and in Pozo Hondo (Santiago del Estero).  Fe y Alegria is currently active in 6 provinces of the country, with 10 formal education centers and two school support teams.

There are, furthermore, concrete plans for establishing operations, either schools or school support teams, in other localities of the provinces of Salta, Jujuy and Santiago del Estero.  In a second stage of development we hope to work in Greater Buenos Aires, a city which has serious problems.  Even though the school infrastructure there is quite developed, the city concentrates in itself  the greatest amount of social crisis in the country.   Most worrisome is the situation of adolescents who are neither studying or working.  Thus in this city our principal effort will be oriented towards work training and social integration.

Lines of action

  1. Initial education and general basic education.
  2. Multi-method education.
  3. Primary education: for adolescents and adults.
  4. Workshops for professional training.
  5. Academic reinforcement.


  1. Creation of 10 educational centers in the marginal zones for the most needy people.  These have been initiatives which united the energies and efforts of many people of good will who have good professional background but could not find ways of working with the poor.
  2. An educational offering characterized by respect, affection and participation, and involving from the very start the teachers, the administrators and the students.  The continual and active presence also of the parents and of the local community is a noteworthy feature of these efforts.
  3. The establishment of a national team which attends to the basic needs of the schools in the areas of administration, teacher training and advising, pastoral support and development of projects for sustainability.
  4. The establishment of regional administrations in Corrientes and Salta.
  5. The obtaining of financing which has made possible the opening of new centers.
  6. Advances in the relationships with the Ministry of Education and other official bodies; advances in the promotion of the institutional image through the mass media; and advances in the formation of a network of relationships with other organizations, businesses and foundations which permit the acquisition of funds to sustain the whole complex of operations.
  7. By means of a structural network and by efforts at the regional and national levels, the schools have obtained material and pedagogical resources which would not have been available to them outside of the network.

New challenges

  1. To create a basic formal education network, at least in the three neediest regions of the country: the Northwest, the Northeast and Greater Buenos Aires.  At the beginning it is necessary to guarantee a common program as regards planning, supervision and evaluation.  In about two years this objective will be attained in its essential aspects.
  2. To develop an internal organization at the national, regional and local levels which allows us to guarantee our institutional objectives and offer a free quality Christian education to the neediest sectors of our society.  This supposes professional teams which are imbued with the mystique of Fe y Alegria as enunciated in the Mission Statement, and which labor both in the direct services of pedagogical and religious formation and in the tasks of administration, promotion and project development.
  3. To create an institutional image at national level, as much in the public scope as in the spaces and institutions with which bonds are had: ONG, Church, State (national, provincial and local), companies, foundations, etc. This will allow to fortify the image of Fe y Alegria in Argentina, but also it will make the pick up possible of bottoms deprived public and that allows to maintain to the educative centers and the rear area net.
